Zimbabweans' priorities for the new Constitution

Zimbabweans’ priorities for the new Constitution

Given that both Zanu PF and MDC-T were campaigning for a Yes Vote in last weekend’s Constitutional Referendum, it’s not surprising that the Referendum passed by a wide margin, and the Draft Constitution will go before Parliament soon.

But as the case of Beatrice Mtetwa recently demonstrated, it’s one thing to have a Constitution, and another thing to follow it.

With this in mind, Kubatana recently solicited Zimbabweans’  priorities for the new Constitution via text message. We received hundreds of replies, and by far the most pressing concerns were for respect for human rights (including freedom of speech, media freedoms and freedom of assembly), adherence to the rule of law, security sector reform and free and fair elections. The word cloud above is a visual representation of all subscribers’ responses.

Where possible, we mapped this feedback as well, and we found over 200 points on a map of Zimbabwe, with subscribers sharing their priorities from across the country. Link to the interactive map below, and click on individual points to read these subscribers’ feedback in their own words, by location and category.

SMS feedback – Blood donations

Monday, June 18th, 2012 by Amanda Atwood

Inspired by a worrying statistic about the paucity of blood donors in Zimbabwe, we recently sent out this text message to our subscribers:

Kubatana! There are only 50,000 blood donors in Zimbabwe. Let’s change that! Celebrate Father’s Day this Sunday and become a donor. Help your family and others.

This prompted a number of responses from our subscribers, some of which we share below:

  • I’m one of the 50,000 & I’ve donated 26 units so far.
  • I donate blood but I cannot afford it when need arises its so expensive its really disappointing.
  • I am among that number. Thanks for the msg.
  • I’m donating every 3mths at Kadoma post.
  • I don’t see the point coz we donate the blood for free & patients are charged exorbitant prices for that same blood.

Visit the National Blood Service Zimbabwe website for more information – and to find out where you can donate.  Whilst you’re at it, share your feedback with NBSZ about donating blood, and about the expense of accessing blood when one needs it.

On Friday, we shared the following question with our subscribers:

Kubatana! Gwisai+5 released last night after 26 nights in detention. Police say NO to MDC weekend peace rallies. What do you think the MDC should do?

We received a number of replies, including:

  • MDC should go to the High Court urgently
  • But these have been given a dispensation to hold these where does Chihuri come?
  • go ahead with rallies as planned
  • No turning back they should carry on with the rally we are prepared for anything, they are not the drivers of our life, we drive ourselves with what we want.
  • I say go Mdc go
  • Mdc go on  hold   rallies   shame   the  devil
  • Egyptian, Tunisian, Libyan and Bahrain style in protest over ban.
  • Reduce number of people per gathering.  use pamphlets & horizontal information dissemination e.g. neighbour 2 neighbour.
  • The MDC should go ahead with the planned rallies, They are peace rallies NOT violent rallies.
  • The MDC cannot be controlled by people who are bandits of Zanu PF or thugs. We should demonstrate like what they used to do.
  • Viva Gwisai And Spirit Of Resistance To rapacious Hegemony. The MDC Should Defy Chihuri And Just Go Ahead.ZANU-PF Thugs Have Limitless Freedom Even To Beat, maim And Rape Innocent Citizenry, why Stop Noble People Friendly Rallies?

  • As long as there is selective application of law targeted sanctions must remain in force. EU & USA must know that we are behind them.
  • MDC should invite UN for peace keeping

  • Mdc must not give up now. They ought to be stronger than b4
  • Freedom of expression is a human right.they shd proceed.
  • There should go on
  • Mdc leadership including mp’s, senators, national exec shd lead a public march next weekend to which everyone is invited. Destination: president’s office or parliament.

  • Mdc as equal patnas in govmnt shld send a clear msg 2 zanu pf that democracy is not a personal commodity , the rally must go ahead.
  • Our campaign should be through the media only. Rallies not the best option to maintain visibility & PEACE
  • Let us go into the streets & pray. Nan
  • should go ahead as per plan
  • Stay at home is what they should do!
  • MDC shud go ahead with e rallies. Police and Zpf, by obstructin these rallies, show that they dont want peace in this country but want to use violence as a tool

  • Theresa Makone should defend MDC cuz Zanu is there to frustrate all efforts. JOMIC must also act on this. Our courts must also be approached to rule on this.
  • Go ahead and hold the rally
  • To show real democracy and unity, let them proceed with their peaceful rallies just like other parties.
  • Proceed
  • The MDC must resist being swallowed or neutralised they must to their democratic intentions which at certain points demands grabing enemies by the horns ,the shortest way is the way of war!
  • They should proceed with the rallies

  • Should go ahead so the Egyptian way will start
  • Let Mdc take the POLICE COMMISSIONer to court. And ask for his removal.
  • We know them. They are allowing this Anti-sanction thing  becoz they feel they own Zim. Let the MDC do door to door campain.
  • For the safety of the people, mdc should stop tomorrow’s rally and find another date. Our police are playing games, they are partisan.
  • Th mdc should just use th courts for safety of its vulnerable supporters one day th court records wil testify against the oppresers
  • Mebbe go to court for adjudi cation
  • Both MDCs shld unite, pressurerize for reforms to have internationally supervised, free & fair elections.
  • Police belong 2 Z.A.N.U. How about if it even withdrawl frm the G.N.U.
  • To go to high court
  • defy the ban & go ahead with it!
  • The MDC should just go ahead with rally and see what the police will do , maybe that will mark the beginning of the long awaited mass protests .
  • Report it to the mediator Mr Zuma so that he shall talk. Why they calling for uplifting of sanctions. It is human rights violation versus sanction.

  • IT’S GOOD NEWS ON THE  RELEASE OF THOSE SIX    ACTIVISTS. MDC MUST   FILE THEIR REPORTS TO  THE FACILITATOR OR TO DISENGANGE FROM THE   SO CALLED GNU.
  • Mdc as a ruling party must mobilize all provincial, Districts leaderships to have a one day rallies nationwide.address
  • MDC SHOULD DO WHAT THEY THINK IS RIGHT AS LONG AS ITS LEGAL.

  • They have to force because the ZANU PF is having anti-sanctions rallies nobody is stopping them
  • The MDC Must Go Ahead With The peace rallies.we have been waiting 4 a long time now.we are fadeup with the dictator’s diabolic tendencies.
  • I THINK MDC SHOULD PRINT THE PAPERS CONTENING THE INFORMATION THAT THEY WANT PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT BUT IT SHOULD BE IN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES.THOSE DISTRIBUTE THE PAPERS MUST NOT WEAR CLOTHES WHICH SHOWS THEIR PARTY BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE AFFRAID TO ACCEPT IT AS THEY DO NOT WANT THEIR MOVEMENTS TO BE KNOWN
  • The MDC has been silent for sometime ,such that they had given the police enough to do what they want .the ban and unlawfuly detention of mps and our activist should stop! We should just go ahead with the planed peace rally .we should come out in numbers head on with those few unprofessional unformed force to show our greavances
  • Put it plainly clear to Zuma that he has failed as mediator. Engage SADC, AU & UN. Psyc up the mass use fliers, posters, media at their disposal. Push 4 elections anytime under whatever conditions MDC will win. They must stop confusing people participating like what they did in 2008 we are in mess because of that 2008 pre-election indecision. Evrone knows thy are winning evn ZANU. Now is the time.
  • Pull out of GNU
  • Although it is very unfair in order to avoid violence due to the Zanu Pf meeting within the vicinity I think MDC should postpone the meeting to next week to avoid chaos.
  • MDC should remain in inclusive Govt, but deny election until new constitution conclusion and make sure it support free and fair election. Thank you.
  • The MDC should never lose hope. Change is around the corner.
  • go ahead as planned
  • take the ministry of home affairs to court it is their right
  • MDC is our only hope of real change. Let’s finish new constitution that supports a free and fair election first. We defeated them last March 2008 but we had no chance of addressing any rally, so don’t worry we’ll do it.
  • MDC Should take police to courts
  • MDC go on with peace rally for the nation of Zimbabwe God is watching.
  • It should just go ahead and hold rallies across the country cos they cant arrest everyone. They should also take the police to court. Wht is Makone doing abt it?
  • Negotiate for free & fair elections
  • I think MDC should find another venue e.g. Zimbabwe grounds
  • They shud go ahead with d rallies. 1. Police a only notified & a not d authorisers. 2. MDC hv once won d case. Any 1 against d judiciary shud be arrested
  • My opinion is that, if it is MDC alone denied permission to do these rallies, then the police should be taken to court for justice’s sake.
  • Continue
  • Application to hold rallies is biased MDC shd step up tk out the obstacles “tp 28″
  • MDC should fight back not to be used by ZANU in the name of INCLUSIVE GVT.
  • go ahead with rallies coz police wil never say yes
  • Lets get into the streets and demonstrate as Zimbabweans
  • As MDC lets speak with 1 voice. lets take advantage of zanu pf’s boring sanctions campaign n tel d nation the truth. Rallies must go on
  • MDC should go ahead. Zanu held their madness. Why.
  • We shld get out of the unt gvt
  • They should seek permission through the courts.
  • MDC must take it to the street to demonstrate against unfair practice by the police
  • I’ve nothing that i can tell the MDC to do bcoz MDC went into the inclusive Gvt with the constituton of the rulling party. Therefo the rulling party’s constitution remains intact therefo i hv no advice to the MDC because the MDC has bn weaked with the ruling party’s constitution
  • Theresa Makone should resign her post in protest of being not empowered to administer the police. P.M must quiz Mugabe.
  • Mdc should take the police to court
  • Silence is no option! The MDC should demand its rights and so should the people of Zimbabwe, whatever the cost. We’ve had enough of these bullying tactics!
  • People see the best of MDC T through the inhuman actions of Zanu-PF Let them campaign for MDC T
  • They should just carry on with mission.
  • Jstce at lst pple shld prcd to do d rallies
  • cal for international assistance
  • Show of defiance
  • Don’t worry about rallies MDC is winning from Mudzi.
  • The ban of the MDC Star Rally by police shows that this country is indeed in crisis.
  • Can’t help imagining this ukaputsirwa midziyo, kuurairwa hama ukarohwa kana kuremadzwa nemunhu weZanu PF ukaenda kunoreporter kuPolice unosungwa. Ukada kuti unorapwa kuchipatara vanorapa arova.
  • It should stop pretending as if all is well. The MDC must stop plans for their upcoming congress as this presents ZPF with a chance to infiltrate as it has already.
  • Stay focussed, keep populace up to date by frequent press releases, not press conferences. People must be told we’re a God fearing party! Rebrand to Christianity.
  • MDC must continue with peace rally. Hakuna akakosha kudarika mumwe. Zvido zveruzhi ndizo zvakakosha. People of ZW vakamirira rally mangwana.
  • All progressive forces must say NO police ban and come in their thousands to the rallies. It’s time we say enough is enough anti-progressive elements.
  • We should just go ahead with the planned peace rally. We should come out in numbers head on with those few unprofessional uniformed forces to show our grievances.
  • The media is now used by government to advance their policies and make people vote for them. Let’s remain focussed and strive to achieve our goal. Ngatishinge varume.
  • MDC should lobby for no even Zanu PF rallies until given their opportunity. All parties equal but MDC is loved by many.
  • Pray God is the answer no fighting.
  • Go ahead with peace rally.

More SMS opinions on Munya

The feedback on Munya’s “compensation for depression” continues to pour in. Here are some more comments from our subscribers:

  • Mugabe is a disgrace + proves he is Senile. The money cld feed starving children,  not given 2 a LOSER like Munya.
  • Kutambisa mari pane zvakawanda zvirikuda mari muzvipatara hazvisati zvaita.
  • It’s good to keep our banner raised.
  • Munya’s compensation 4 losing is very very unreasonable.
  • Does it mean to say that Munya will pocket the whole cash just like that?
  • Its more to do with his back ground.  The mother is in government and the father is a well established business man.  Im sure its a way of honouring the family.
  • On my opinion that was excelent
  • solidarity with munya not bad…may be extent yacho is the one to debate
  • HOW COULD WE EXPECT  MUNYA TO WIN I PERSONALLY FEEL IF EACH TEACHER WAS GIVEN USD IO THA THANK YOU FOR IGOT CHICKEN TO CHANGE VIDEO BYE C G MUTAWU
  • Zvakanaka bcoz BBA management was not fair on final results.
  • wicked and imorality at its climax may god bless the poor, the sick, the homeless and the hungry
  • He deserved mo coz dat waznt fair at all.at least BBA hz smthing 2 learn, & did u knw zimbabweans ar natural born ‘winners’ at global scale?
  • Its of no use splashing cash on individual yet the nation is suffering
  • They are wasting on compansating Munya, instead of donating to poor people, ophans and even civ cervants
  • He deserve the price.let the organisers know that we are suprised by giving our loser a token of appreciation that is more than e winner.
  • Where is that money coming from? Civil servants are not paid well.yu dont need to work to get money but to play with thozn power
  • Thats nonsensical the loss is not compensatory. furthermore u can not claim that he was duped wen countries did not vote for him. do zanu pf wants to hold another big brother africa!
  • It could be that he is connected to the good samaritens in some way.
  • Munya was not supposed to be given that money ..why .they are failures .how can they give Munya 300  000US$ while the country need money. We need money to pay civil servants.
  • As brothers there is nothing wrong. He should not compensate him because if he face problem his brother will help him as well.
  • That is the problem with an outdated regime, with very high misplaced priorities. If those people who raised the funds could raise fundraise for only one turbine for our KARIBA ELECTRICITY generation. To me it is stupid, myopic and cheap politicking.
  • its a game always there is a winner & loser .we cannot compensate him for a depresion but maybe for  representing us  well did not get lost in his humility
  • Munya was a pawn in Mugabe and ZANU PF publicity stunts. They can sink so low to grab any publicity stunt especially after being rebuffed by heroic Mabhena.
  • ZVAVO ZVEKUPENGA IZVO.KUTADZA KUSHANDISA MARI YACHO, KANA PAYER MABILLS EMAGETSI. KUNGODA KUCHIPISANA BEDZI ISUTINA KANAMARI YEKU PAYER COACH WENATINAL TEAM
  • Its a total shame! The US$300000 should have been donated to critical institutions such as the children homes.
  • If there is anything that I have been shocked by in my life is that of Munya. How can a loser be celebrated like that? I think Munya was supposed to be given a depression welcome.
  • He must be a relative of a minister or a zanu boy. How many times have they failed to pay our national squad after a win. Shame on them.
  • Big Brother sucks, Munya is a rock. Zim must boycott next year’s BBA coz it’s full of beans.
  • That’s wasting vanhu vachifa mumamisha nezvirwere pasina mishonga

Mixed opinion on Munya – Zimbabweans speak out

Saturday, October 23rd, 2010 by Amanda Atwood

Following Natasha’s blog about Munya, the Big Brother candidate who got more money from Phillip Chiyangwa for losing the competition than he would have gotten from the show had he won, we wanted to hear what other people thought about this.

We sent out this text message yesterday:

Kubatana! Munya from Big Brother gets US$300 000 for losing. Text us your opinion on him getting “compensation for depression.” www.kubatana.net

So far, we’ve gotten a number of responses, with opinion split among those who think Munya’s $300,000 reward was deserved, and those opposed to it. We share some of these responses below:

  • Munya was not supposed to be given that money. Why? They are failures. How can they give Munya $300,000 while the country needs money?
  • These are the end of days according to the bible. Saturn is creating new ways to grab people. Don’t be surprised!
  • It’s amazing, I think that huge amount should have been given to teachers or orphans.
  • Is it the same Munya who kissed and romanced another man in a movie. If a man can kiss another man and walk away $300,000 richer, those anti-gays must
  • withdraw their words.
  • He is a blood diamond friend somehow
  • He has just put the country on the map of Africa but people must accept that he wasn’t robbed, he deserves what he gets. Let them avoid politicking.
  • It’s good becuse he is patriotic to his nation.
  • Something is amiss. Someone would want to use him to gain some milage politically or otherwise directly or indirectly sooner or later.
  • CRAZY
  • GOOD FOR HIM
  • That is zimbabwe when others who do not appear on tv cannot afford to pay school fees and a not well connected to get 200 dollars.
  • I thought he was to win this time. Its worth his effort. Lucky guy
  • We Zimbabweans are crazy
  • That’s good
  • THERE IS MONEY IN THIS COUNTRY AFTERALL CIVIL SERVANTS ARE JUST UNFORTUNATE
  • Thats madness of highest propotion wtout priorities v avis social deprivion of masses ie HIV/aids
  • Thats was a very good move.may God bless all who contributed.
  • I think he deserves every cent. He went thru hell in that hse and still pulled thru 2 the last day
  • suffering to continue until further notice
  • A waste of resouces
  • $5.2 each civil servant could have been better.Where did the monie come from? What did Zim benefit from this BB which is seen by the rich while the poor are forced 2 watch heroes Zbc.
  • being given award is not a matter of winning or lossing, but encouranging and supporting
  • SURPRISINGLY TRS ARE IN NEED OF A GENUINE PKG BT NOT GETIN ONE FROM E SM MERCIFUL FATHA!
  • THERE IS NOTHING WRONG ON MUNYA GETTING THAT MONEY BT ITS ONLY THAT SOME PEOPLE RE TRYING 2 MIX ENTERTAIMENT WITH THEIR POLITICAL AGENDAS!
  • Whats the point of giving Munya that amount after losing what about donating 2 Chinyaradzo or Mashambanzou
  • My opinion states wastage in their reserves whats their next option.
  • I think it is good because it reduces stress
  • Abuse of funds
  • This is nt a surprise they always did tht instead of giving teachers money they æ busy wasting it.who is Munya and his big brother africa?to hell
  • He deserves it he made zim  proud  coz he faced 2 many evictions in the prosses of the competition
  • It’s unheard of – you are left wondering what’s gone wrong with our priorities as to reward failure
  • If you watched big brother you would understand that the Nigerians cheated us and you would be investigating that. myself   aand everyone i know is standing by Munya and we are not even  Zanu PF people! Unless you are black and watched BB u wont inderstand
  • ko icampaign time
  • These former political heavy weights are clu tching on anythi ng which can give them mileage
  • WHAT A SHAME ITS LIFE LET IT BE SO
  • MA ONE PANYAYA YAKE
  • Am certain we have better priorities in the country presently…that same amount would have transformed the pathetic, inhumane conditions of Zimbabwe’s prisoners, or even secured ARVs for the infected or better still served as a 13th cheque for civil servants…..GoZ (2010) defines priorities as anything that gets it onto the limelight for all the wrong reasons!!!
