Zimbabweans celebrate with Egyptians

TOP del.icio.us

After Mubarak’s resignation was announced on Friday, we sent out this text message to our subscribers:

Kubatana! People power brings down 30 year dictatorship in Egypt. Mubarak has resigned. Cairo is celebrating.

Below are some of the replies – which give a sense of how similar many Zimbabweans view the two countries’ situations to be:

  • There were 10 dictators hanging on the wall & if 2 dictators should accidentally fall there’ll be 8 dictators hanging on the wall and if 1 dictator should accidentally fall there’ll be 7 ….And so on!
  • Happy, hapy, hapy new Egypt!! Mubarak is gone. Unitd, ple cn do it. Who’s nxt? Free Africa’s cmng
  • Thank God! hope the same wl happen in Zim!

  • Strong will, courage and determination is all it takes to change the world.

  • What a relief. Surely where there is a will there is a way. In the name of the almighty GOD let us wait for the next one in line to follow suit.

My submission is that Zimbabwe is very different from all these other nations in a number of ways. Its politics, its people, its history and the social complexities that while i appreciate the wave of people power that has rocked the northern African states am very apprehensive in imagining that happening in Zimbabwe. My understanding and view is that Zimbabwe has gone past that phase a decade ago when the epicenter of all ingredients of disillusionment, frustration, pain and hunger had strongly mounted and it was indeed the people’s expression that was hijacked by opposition politics and termed to suite their hunger for power that has proved desperate to this day. We need fresh thinking politics as we have gone past the styles in north Africa of change of government. I dont see what happened in Egypt happening in Zimbabwe, we are way ahead of all this and we are informed from where we are coming from. We cant fight backwards but forward.
