Dear Brenda,
I couldn’t agree more with all the beautiful words on Monica. As a medical student I spent several months in Murambinda in 2000 and 2001. Monica was my hero, she was the best role model for a doctor I had ever seen.
Undoubtedly, she must have helped numerous people and saved many lifes.
She has been a great influence in my life, and my time at the Murambinda Mission Hospital made me even decide to pursue a career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

On a personal note, she was the kindest of collegues you will ever meet, and I will cherish all my memories of her for the rest of my life.
It is with great sorrow that today I read this news on the internet, searching for Monica and wondering how she was doing…The world has lost a very special person. Thank you for sharing your story and pictures.

Thanks so much for this. What an impact she made! I only met Dr Monica once, but she had a special resonance for me partly as my father had been a doctor in a similarly rural environment. Your descriptions of this remarkable person, and the account and photographs of her funeral are really wonderful.

thank you for a most beautifully worded monica story encompassing many of the wonderful sides of an intrepid pioneer. matter-of-fact and down-to-earth, no-nonsense monica. she was inspirational in leading a delightfully non-conformist life in the heart of a hugely structured environment. she not only managed not to ruffle feathers but to seamlessly cross-pollinate hugely opposed ethics, rules and regulations, with everyone smiling and better off for being part of the process.
may ‘monica’s way’ remain an inspiration to us all.

p.s. I think you exaggerate the lack of contents in monica’s luggage, I bet she had a toothbrush too!!
